Help build GIGA Storage’s central SCADA platform and grow into a SCADA expert for our large-scale battery storage projects.

Job description

Location: Genk, Belgium

Help build the technology behind large-scale battery storage

What does it take to control some of Europe’s largest battery storage projects safely and reliably? It starts with knowing exactly what is happening across every site, in real time. That is where SCADA comes in.

At GIGA Storage, we develop, invest in and operate large-scale battery storage projects across the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany. By 2030, we aim to manage 1.5–2 GW of operational BESS assets. That is a battery portfolio at gigawatt scale, with enough power to supply more than a million households with electricity simultaneously at peak output. To operate this growing portfolio, we are now building the central SCADA environment that will connect our battery sites, systems and Operations team.

As our SCADA Engineer, you will join while that environment is still being built. You will help shape how our sites communicate with the central platform, how operators monitor and control our assets and how we prepare for future 24/7 dispatching. It is an opportunity to combine your experience in industrial automation with large-scale energy technology, while growing into one of GIGA Storage’s key SCADA experts.

Your role

You will work at the intersection of Operations, Engineering, IT/OT and external system integrators. Your focus is on the complete automation chain, from field equipment and high- and medium-voltage installations at our battery sites to the data, signals and visualisations our operators use centrally.

You will translate operational needs into clear functional specifications, define standards for signals and visualisations and make sure local SCADA systems integrate reliably with our central platform. You will work closely with suppliers and integrators during implementation, testing and commissioning, while gradually building the knowledge to take more technical ownership yourself.

This is not a role where you spend your days programming PLCs. It is a great next step if you already have a solid foundation in industrial automation or SCADA and want to broaden your scope. You will move beyond individual systems and components and develop a deeper understanding of how everything connects, while taking on more responsibility as our battery portfolio grows.

What will you do?

  • Translate requirements from Operations, Asset Management, Safety and IT/OT into clear functional SCADA specifications, and work with suppliers and system integrators to turn them into working solutions.

  • Take ownership of the end-to-end signal architecture, including signal lists, naming conventions, HMI visualisations, dashboards and system overviews.

  • Coordinate the integration between local SCADA systems, the central platform and connected systems such as EMS and data platforms, ensuring reliable data flows and communication.

  • Prepare and execute FAT and SAT testing, validate system functionality and gradually take the technical lead during commissioning.

  • Monitor system performance, alarms and data flows, analyse incidents and work with colleagues and suppliers on improvements, while growing into a central SCADA point of contact within GIGA Storage.

What do you bring?

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Automation, Electromechanical Engineering, Energy, ICT or a comparable technical field, combined with around 4 to 6 years of relevant experience in industrial automation, SCADA or an OT environment.

  • A good understanding of the automation chain from field equipment to central systems, including industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, IEC 104 and OPC UA.

  • Experience with HMI/visualisation, functional testing and FAT/SAT. Experience with commissioning, PLC configuration, alarm management or EMS integration is a plus.

  • An analytical and practical mindset, strong communication skills and the confidence to work with and challenge technical suppliers and system integrators.

  • Fluency in Dutch and English, willingness to travel occasionally to our sites and colleagues in the Netherlands, and the flexibility to support a business-critical SCADA environment when needed.

You do not need to know everything from day one. If you are currently working as a field technician, automation engineer or SCADA engineer and are ready to step into a broader, more overarching role, we would be happy to hear from you.

Why choose this role?

  • Join at an early stage of a new central SCADA platform and have a genuine influence on its setup and standards.

  • Grow into GIGA Storage’s internal SCADA expert, with plenty of room to develop your technical knowledge and ownership.

  • Work on business-critical systems for large-scale battery storage projects and contribute directly to the energy transition.

  • Help lay the technical foundation for GIGA Storage’s future 24/7 dispatching and control room.

What we offer

Working at GIGA Storage means joining a fast-growing international organisation with an informal, transparent and ambitious culture. You will have plenty of room for your own ideas, initiative and personal development.

  • An attractive salary with 8% holiday allowance.

  • A performance bonus of up to 10%

  • A fixed year-end bonus of 7 to 9%.

  • 28 days of annual leave.

  • A personal development budget of €750,- per year.

  • A pension scheme with two-thirds of the contribution paid by the employer.

  • A laptop and a net phone allowance of €25,- per month.

  • Travel allowance and an e-bike scheme.
